[GL] Saturday, Nov 25th: World of Warcraft

Welcome to the first Avalanche Online Gaming League session! Our game for this session will be World of Warcraft and will take place Saturday, November 25th, and the time will be 8:00 PM Eastern. (So figure out what time zone you're in .)

Ideas, suggestions, and discussion of this session before and after will commence here.

Since this is the first one, I have instructions here on how to play, because we'll be using a free server.

1. Have WoW installed (duh) and patched up to 1.12.1; while this server has plans to upgrade to Burning Crusade once that's released, they aren't that far yet.
2. Go here to create an account Remember the name and password, as those will be for logging into WoW
3. Go into your World of Warcraft folder. There's a file called realmlist.wtf. Open it with Notepad and change whatever text is there to set realmlist 86.86.141.32. I advice making a copy of that file first and putting it somewhere you'll remember. Changing the text changes what servers you're accessing and if you want to play on Blizzard servers again, you'll need the text that was originally there.
4. Make sure to keep your WDB folder empty before playing a game of WoW. You may need to delete config.wtf from the WTF folder in WoW.
5. Once WoW is loaded and you've logged in, create a character on the Burning Crusade realm; it's a PVP realm and there are only two realms, so you shouldn't get confused. This is the realm we're playing on. Again, it's not Burning Crusade; that's just the name.
NOTE: We will be playing Horde.

And there you go! Now you're playing WoW with us at AO. One note of importance however is travel. Some of the travel places, like boats and zepplins, don't work. The programmers realized this and fixed things in a way to make it easier: teleporters. They can transport you between capital cities. Us at AO will be playing Horde, so make sure not to go to the wrong teleporter succubus on Hyjal .

Here you see me at the inner-entrance to Ogrimmar. When you talk to the succubus, she will give you this list. Select the Theater.



You'll appear in Mt. Hyjal, an off-limits section of the game in the Blizzard servers that's been turned into an Event area here. For now, what you want is to notice this little hill near the seats. Go up it.



And here Betty is the teleporter, giving you access to whichever capital cities you want to go to. That's the process for major movement in lieu of zepplins and boats.



She's by the elevators in Thunder Bluff.



And by the elevators (upper area) of the Undercity.


That should be everything. Saturday, November 25th, 8 PM Eastern (5 Pacific). We're meeting at Ogrimmar. Try to be around level 10 when you get there, and don't go too far over that. When you've got your character created, post the name and class here so others can add to friends' lists. So far we have:

Griever (Mage)
Orren (Warlock) --- Drake's character
Tictac (Priest)

That's it. I'm looking forward to Saturday . My thinking is that we'll play in the Barrens for a bit, doing quests and such, but really it's open. Regardless I'm sure we'll have fun.

It's the beginning of AO Community Gaming . We're going to try playing games together as a group and WoW is first. I hope to soon schedule sessions for RTS and FPS games that numerous members have and want to play.

Is the file patched up to 1.12.1 from fileplanet, or is that the current patch (i.e. if we patch it officially, will it patch it up to 1.12.1, and no more?) or do we need to get a seperate patch file to install it?

And how many people are we expecting? 10ish?

Seven at the moment.

It only goes higher than 1.12.1 if you're in Europe at the moment, but getting it from Fileplanet might be safest. WoW will only try to upgrade you itself when you log into Blizzard servers.

For you WoW players that regularly play on blizzard servers I suggest the following:

Make an exact duplicate of your "World of Warcraft" folder and call in "World of Warcraft2" or whatever and keep it in your "Program Files" then change the realmlist.wtf and erase the config.wtf and clear your WDB folder in one of them. then you can make a shortcut of your second wow.exe fale and put it wherever your other shortcut is and then you won't have to switch your realmlist.wtf file to change servers.

I also want to note that for playing on the free server, whether you make duplicate WoW folders or not, it's good to empty the WBN folder before starting each time (just on the free server though.)

If they update the server, you won't know until it starts screwing up for you. Deleting those before starting means I don't have to bother checking when they update or wait for the game to screw up.

Well, you should, but I don't and it works fine for me.

Also, you might want to put my name next to Orren (just because Drake was taken... maybe... I didn't try >__<) just incase people didn't see that he is my character in the other thread.

I was playing on my second character and some lvl 50 just gave me 15 gold money things. (gold pieces?)



She's alliance though, so... I don't think I can distribute it to you guys...

15g is a lot of money for a low level.

Holy crap, Drake! I think 15g is the most I've had at one time when I was playing and got to lvl 33 or so. Be good with it .

I don't think we'd be needing the money too much though; combining our skills, we should be able to get whatever we need for a while.

Drake - Make a South Park char with the same BG and basic blackish outfit so I can add you to my sig and have all four of us.
