Tekken 6
So on impulse (and partially because I love fighting games), I decided to get Tekken 6. And holy crap, it's prolly the single most beginner UNfriendly game I've ever played. I'm trying to learn the game, learn the moves, learn the most basic of basic strategies, and my attacks are still disjointed and inelegant, and I'm still getting my butt kicked by the Easy Mode AI.
Compared to Soul Calibur, the timings are a lot stricter, and the moves are, in general, a lot more difficult to pull off. Particularly since pressing down makes you duck and pressing up makes you jump, so your inputs need to be much tighter. And without a sword in hand, it makes judging distance a lot more difficult.

Question:
Have you tried to see the demos of the moves in Training Mode? I know in Tekken 4, you could see the move being displayed along with a listing of the buttons that you had to press. What I really enjoyed was how they also would light up the buttons in the rhythm in which they needed to be hit in order to preform the move. Also, have you messed around with player customization yet? I want to know if you can mix and match pieces from one costume with another, (example: an item from the P1 costume mixed with another item from P2). |

Yes, I've checked out the move demos in Training Mode. But it's not all that helpful. The timings for most of these moves are too subtle and too tight for you to learn merely by watching the computer pull it off and can only be learned by actually trying to input them yourselves.
That and there are no demos for learning custom move strings and juggles and most of the techniques you will be applying in actual combat, so that doesn't help at all. Regarding character customization, as far as I can tell, you can mix and match costumes. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to try this myself because not being able to beat the Easy Mode AI opponent means not being able to earn money to buy the extra pieces.

Well I recent just got the game and the story mode gameplay is as you described. If it were like the gameplay like the arcade mode it been much cooler. Only played a couple of levels so far.
The final boss to the arcade is tough at times depending on your character. The end boss to Streetfighter 4 was hard too.

I purchased it for PSP and I must say that the story mode is disappointing; thankfully the healthy cast of characters keeps the game afloat. I, too, find difficulty stringing combos together. I started it out on normal and got my ass handed to me so I switched it to easy, but that didn't make the game much 'easier' at all. I enjoy Tekken 6, but I wish I could use more than a small handful of characters adeptly. Hwoarang, Yoshimitsu, and Lars are really the only characters I'm able to use well.

Well, most experienced players are really only good with one or maybe two characters. The characters' movesets are so dramatically different that (outside of beginner-level play) learning how to play one character doesn't really carry over to playing another character. In fact, I dare say that learning how to play even *one* character effectively requires you to study that character and practice that character for hours.

Yes, but more so with 3d fighting games like Tekken and Soul Calibur where even the most basic of moves are dramatically different from character to character.
Compare to Street Fighter, where even though each character has a different playstyle, they each have a weak punch, medium punch, strong punch, weak kick, etc... Contrast with Smash Bros, where even though at expert-level play, the characters are dramatically different, but even at casual level play, all you really need to know is control stick to move, A to attack, B to use special moves, and you're done.

Quite frankly I liked the old 2D fighting more. I like Mortal Kombat with it was just 2D, when it changed to 3D it just didn't play the same and the end moves were limited to just the one unless the older versions.
Like the new Street fighter wasn't that good and Tekken is a let down too.

I dunno, I thought Street Fighter 4 played exactly the same as Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix with the addition of Super (Ultra?) moves?
Also, strictly speaking, Street Fighter 4 is still a 2D fighting game. It just has 3D graphics. And character designs that look like they've been taking steroids for the last 8 years.

The Mortal Kombat series was ruined when it turned 3D. I loved the 2D series of Mortal Kombat.

In any case, I've given up on Tekken 6. I just couldn't get a feel for what I was doing. I've gone back to playing BlazBlue instead.

Oh that BlazBlue game looks good. It's not over here in the UK yet. Sources say next month.
Well I don't blame you Viltris I rather play a game not just based on looks alone. So an old school game can play better than some new games. Especially with fighting game personally.
