Getting to sing a vocal track to a game these days can open you up to a large audience. I had no idea who Utada Hikaru, Rikki, Emiko Shiatori, Faye Wong or Yae were beforehand. When I bought the singles of the theme songs usually you get a b-side of the artists on there too and with Utada, Rikki & Yae - I loved them so much I've now bought their entire catalogues too.
Has anyone else found great artists through VGM like this?
Yae is probably my favourite. Her 4 albums are stunning to me and sound much like FF:CC actually. Its all beautifully layered acoustic instruments and very yummy indeed.
Utada's first album (First Love) didnt do anything for me at all but I love her other 2 Japanese albums and her English one too (Exodus). She has a real quirkiness in her pop music which appeals to me.
Rikki however is yet to really grow on me. Somehow I managed to buy her first mad album (herself and kyoto) which is only listenable in small chunks and most of her work is poorly produced too - her voice pierces the ear badly in places lol. Still I will persevere!
So anyone else now a fan of VGM singers?
